The Queen Bee at Riverside Quay
When we commissioned an extension of the iconic Richard Stringer artwork ‘Queen Bee’ to feature at our 2 Riverside Quay building we knew we’d create quite the buzz, and in a thriving urban hive like the Riverside Quay precinct this unique and beguiling artwork has done just that.
Adorning the building’s entrance for Melbournians, tourists and tenants alike can enjoy ‘Queen Bee’, originally created for a series of studio works in 2003 and 2004 and subsequently commissioned in a large-scale version as a colony of bees by global architectural practice Fender Katsalidis for their project, Eureka Tower in 2007.Fender Katsalidis later approached us with the idea of extending the artwork and as part of our revitalisation of the precinct it made perfect sense.
Bold and beautiful, the striking installation reflects our ongoing commitment to the enrichment of the public domain, particularly through the integration of and carefully curated publicly accessible art. It’s also a sweet reminder of the symbiotic relationship between art and architecture.
